In some cases different septs using the same surname arose in widely different areas. In other cases migration due to war dispersed them. In Gaelic times County Westmeath was known as Teffia and ruled by the O'Connelans. Later the O'Conrys and MacConways came to prominence. It was quite fragmented with many small territories, prominent ones including those of the MacGeoghegans, The O'Catharniaghs (Foxes), The O'Malones, the O'Hanrahans and the Norman de Nogent, later Nugents.
